  • Bye Bye Walkman

This, kids, is a Sony Walkman cassette player. A really old one. The news today is that Sony are going to stop making them. For anyone who grew up in the 80’s that’s very sad news. Every house has a walkman. Casettes were the only way to listen to your music on the go. Then came the CD Walkman which didn’t really take off. Nowadays, of course it’s all MP3.  So I wonder if Walkmen (or is it Walkmans?) will become worth a few quid over time now that you can’t get them anymore.

Als on today’s show, we asked you what you think are the scariest movies. You can find out what ours are in today’s audio clip. Scary Movies

Our volunteer experience continues this week. As I write, Mary O’Neill is in her hometown of Kilkenny getting an idea of what she’ll e geting up to tomorrow morning. So join us from 6.50 to find out!

  • Coffee?

Mmmm…it’s about that time of the day when I could use a shot of caffeine. But ladies beware if you’re a coffee lover! Scientists have proven that one of the side affects is smaller boobs! If you want the details  (and it is fascinating) you can get the science bit here.

The list of 50 Best Jokes of all time is out! Now, we went throught them and most are really old and not really funny any more but who are we to judge?! See for yourself here!

  • SHANE!!!

Shane Filan. Looking all broody. He was on Beat Breakfast this morning to tell us all about the band’s new album Gravity. I love the story that a fan on twitter picked the name! And despite being a member of the biggest boyband in the world, he seems to be keeping it real – he told us all about bringing his daughter to school where he caused quite the commotion at first. Check out the podcast site to hear it again (or for the first time if you missed it!)

Also this morning, we warned you about the seven deadly sins of facebook updating! You can get the full list here. You have been warned.

Tomorrow, I’ll be volunteering in Carlow. I’ve just been to the Carlow Volunteer Centre on a bit of a reconnaissance mission and I reckon I’m gonna enjoy the experience! Listen in tomorrow to find out more!

  • IT’S THE RUDDY X FACTOR!!!

You probably don’t recognise the guy in today’s pic but you DEFINITELY know his voice. That’s Peter Dickson – the voice-over guy for X Factor. He also does all the E4 ads and promos. He chatted to us this morning, along with former contestant Lloyd Daniels – who he now manages! They are the spokespeople for breat cancer awareness website coppafeel.org and they told us about how they got involved. We also talked about this season’s X Factor and you can hear it all on the Beat 102-103 podcast site here.

Also on this morning’s show, we found out another of Mary’s food habits. As it turns out, a lot of people like to throw chips on their burger to make a chip butty. Niall and I both think if ya want a chip butty, ask for one. I like to keep my burger and chips seperate, thank you. There was also mention of mixing mint-chocolate and popcorn. Madness. You can hear our food fallout in today’s clip. FOOD

So that’s Monday. We’re back tomorrow at 6.50 when we’ll find out what I’ll be doing in week 2 of the Beat Breakfast Volunteer Experience!

    Talk t’ya then!

  • WHAT COLOUR?

How ARE ya! Now…concentrate. There’s a genuinely important reason for this pic being here. A major new scientific study has found that the colour of a woman’s underwear is vital in the pursuit interpersonal relationships as it’s an indication of the wearer’s personality. This is gospel. Scientists have proven it. For exanple, the young lady in that picture, because she’s wearing pink underwear, is romantic, gentle and in need of affection. Quite. You can get the full run down here and judge for yourself. We even asked Mary! And you can hear all in today’s audio clip which is simply called Underwear!

Also on this morning’s show, we heard all about Niall’s volunteer experience in South Tipperary. He helped out cleaning an old graveyard in Cahir and, surprisingly, got on rather well! You can check out the pics in the gallery section at beat102103.com here.

We’re back tomorrow for the usual fun Friday show. We’ll have Cheese Or No Cheese and TFI – so let us know what you’re up to for the weekend.

Talk to ya in the morning!

  • Stand Well Back!

So Niall spent the morning volunteering in Cahir. That’s an actual pic of him getting ready to get to work with the rest of the team at the South Tipperary Volunteer Centre. He got his hands well dirty helping to tidy up the old St Mary’s Graveyard. I don’t know if Niall was nervous, being in such spooky surrounds on a misty morning but I’m sure everybody else was more nervous about the fact that they gave him a strimmers to work with! RUN! We’re gonna find out tomorrow morning how he got on.

Our special guest this morning was best selling Irish singer-songwriter Cathy Davey who, fresh from her gig in Kilkenny, has two more dates in the South east this week. Tomorrow night, she’ll be in the Riverbank House Hotel in Wexford and then on Saturday in the Forum in Waterford.

And our latest pet story/cute pic of the day was about a dog who gives his mate a piggy-back. His mate is a bird! You can check it out here here.

    We’re back tomorrow – 6.50!

  • Joe McElderry

There’s Joe McElderry belting out a tune! He’s back after taking time out to record his album and this morning, he was up early to tell Beat Breakfast all about his return to the X Factor studio to perform the new single Ambitions from his upcoming album Wide Awake which is released on October 25th. You can listen to the interview right here on our podcast site!

Mary was back today and in true Mary style gave us another gem of a story about the kind of thing she got up to in her spare time growing up. She and her cousin used to find Pat Bonners in the Donegal phonebook and ring them up! Have a listen here… Mary rings Packie Bonner!

We also, rather embarrassingly, shared our PPI National Radio Awards stories from Friday night. The Radio Awards is always a fun night but the likelihood of randomly chatting to people who are, quite frankly, way more famous than any of us is high. For instance, Mary showed off her Waterford impression to Mario Rosenstock (from a certain comedy sketch series) while I, after giving up on trying to make Nadia Forde take any notice, spent some time getting tips from the legend that is Tony Fenton. Good times. Niall was one of the presenters at the awards which took place at the Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny once again. He said the sight of Pat Kenny looking up at him made him more nervous than he’s ever been. Well, it would! You can check out Niall doing his thing, and get all the details of Beat 102-103’s double succes on the Beat Blog!

We’re back tomorrow at 6.50 when we will reveal all about our latest big social experiment!

    Talk to ya then!

  • QUICK UPDATE!

That’s me tux! All set for tonight’s National Radio Awards which I have to go get ready for so I’ve just time to tell you that this week’s podcast is now available! Orla was in for Mary this week and, as ever, we had the craic.  There’s talk of guilty pleasures, booty calls, secrets (including a strange girl’s bathroom/shower habits) the excuses women make and what we really look for in the opposite sex. You can check it out at our podcast site beat102103.podomatic.com.

On Monday’s Beat Breakfast, we’ll be speaking to last year’s X Factor winner Joe McElderry about his new album and we get his thoughts on this year’s X Factor contestants! So join us on Monday morning from 6.50 on Beat 102-103!

    Have a great weekend everone!

  • SHAYNE WARD

There’s former X Factor winner Shayne Ward recording his new album in Sweden. He took time out to chat to Beat Breakfast this morning. The album – called Obsession – will be launched in November and he’s got a brand new single on the way too – a cover of the Nickelback hit Gotta Be Somebody. He also told us about his trip to the World Cup this summer and gave us his thoughts on the new series of X Factor. You can listen to the interview on the Beat 102-103 podcast site.

The major talking point on the this morning’s show was how women use the excuse “I’m just a girl!” to get out of doing jobs around the house. This could be anything from lifting to cleaning the car. 88% of women are guilty of this! You can read the evidence here.

And Jennifer Aniston is the number 1 celebrity singleton! The more I think about it, I don’t know if that’s flattering or not. Yeah, you’re hot but what’s wrong with you that you can’t get a boyfriend?! You can get the full list here.

We’ll talk to ya on tomorrow’s Beat Breakfast – 6.50!

  • MMM CHIPS

Even the sight of chips makes me hungry. I genuinely want a bag of chips right now. Instead, I’m just gonna tell you about the latest breakthrough in food science. Powdered vinegar (a seasoning combining salt and vinegar) means you never have to put up with soggy chips again. Now, I’m a salt only man but if like millions of others you love a splash of vinegar as well, then you’ll no doubt be delighted with this invention. You can read the science bit here.

A couple of our other favourite stories today include the clown that topped the poll in the recent Brazilian elections. No, I’m not knocking a South American politician. He actually is a clown! Have a look for yourself! His election slogan of “It Couldn’t Get Any Worse. Vote For Me!” is genius. And could be used by any party over here!

And if you have any salt left over from your chips, then take a massive pinch of it. Peter Andre and Kim Kardashian have been linked. They’ve both denied it and Peter Andre claims they’ve never met but says Kim is “sexy”.  Not wrong there, mate.

Tomorrow on Beat Breakfast, we speak to Shayne Ward about his new single and album which are both set to be released soon!
