Youths Snap Up Goalkeeper Matthew Connor

Wexford Youths have announced the signing of goalkeeper Matthew Connor. The 18 year-old signs for the club having spent the last two seasons with Waterford United.

The talented young goalkeeper has been capped for the Republic of Ireland at Under-17 and Under-18 level and played his schoolboy football with Tramore AFC in Waterford. He also lined out for numerous Waterford Schoolboy League teams and the Waterford Inter League Youth squad.

“I’m delighted to be joining the club,” Connor said after signing. “It's a club that’s going in the right direction and there's a great bunch of lads here; staff and players, and I’m already impressed with the level of professionalism around the club and I'm really looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“I got a call off Shane (Keegan) a few weeks back and I had a very positive meeting with him. I knew a lot about the club from being away with a few of the players in Korea during last season (with the Irish college’s team). With what Shane had to add, it really was a no-brainer to join.”

Connor is looking forward to battling with, and learning from, current PFAI First Division Team of the Year goalkeeper Graham Doyle.

“Graham has been unquestionably the best keeper in the 1st Division during the last couple of years and I can't wait to get working with himself and Gavin the goalkeeping coach. At my age there's still loads of learning to be done and I think there's no better man to push myself against and to learn off than Graham himself.

Having trained with his new team mates on Wednesday, Connor can’t wait to get started, and is jokingly looking forward to not having to face last season’s top scorer Danny Furlong this season.

“I think Danny scored on me every time I played against him last year, he’s a great player, so thankfully I'll only have to worry about that in training this year. But like I said, there's a great group here. For a lot of the players and the club itself it's our first experience of Premier Division football, so you can only be excited to see what challenges this year will bring.”
