A Carlow man is set to spend Christmas Day on one of the highest mountains in the world.

Ollie Towmey will tackle the daunting slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania on a nine-day expedition over the festive period.

Ollie hopes to raise €10,000 for Depaul, a cross-border charity supporting people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Ollie won an All-Ireland Colleges’ senior football medal with St. Nathy’s College in 2000 under the guidance of John O’Mahony. Son of Mags and Pat Towey, Brusna, he currently lives with his wife Debra at their home in Ballinabranna, County Carlow.

“Our housing crisis is beyond a joke and it’s not getting any better any time soon,” he explained to the Carlow Nationalist.

Ollie is no stranger to tackling some of the world’s greatest mountains. In 2016, he scaled the South Base Camp of Mount Everest in a bid to raise funds and awareness for “A Miracle for Doireann”.

In August of this year, Ollie climbed Carrantuohill with three workmates — Ian Forsyth, John Dunne and Dwain Wearen — in aid of Focus Ireland.

Ollie works for Griffdon Engineering and Suir Engineering at Intel, County Kildare, and hopes to be back in time to spend time with his family on New Year’s Eve.
