Woman dies after car enters River Lee, two children rescued

A woman (40s) has died after a car entered the River Lee in Cork city on Friday night.

The incident occurred at around 8.30pm when the car ended up in the river at Kennedy Quay.

Gardaí confirmed that two children were recovered from the water and were taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The woman's body was recovered and also taken to CUH where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

A Garda spokesperson said officers are investigating “all the circumstances” of the incident. As reported by the Irish Examiner, the results of the post-mortem will determine the course of the investigation.

Naval divers, Crosshaven Coastguard and Mallow Search and Rescue personnel were involved in the recovery of the woman's body.

Several people who saw the incident unfolding contacted the emergency services.

The Coastguard 117 helicopter from Waterford and Cork Missing Persons Search and Recovery also joined gardaí and four units of Cork City Fire Service in the rescue operation.
