Five free events to catch in the South East this weekend

With all this hot weather and endless sunshine, it can be easy to forget that there's more to our weekends then simply heading straight to the beach.

This weekend sees a host of quality free events hosted across the South East.

From battle reenactments to literacy festivals, June 15-18 is jampacked with events that won't empty your wallet.

1. Wexford: Battle of New Ross Reenactment / June 16 at 2pm

Hosted by a group of local re-enactors, the The 1798 Battle of New Ross in which 3,000 people lost their lives will be staged from Mary Street to the Quay on Sunday from 2:00pm. Perfect for all history lovers.

2. Waterford City: Summer In The City - Duke Special at Art Beat / June 16 at 8pm

The Lisburn native takes to the Church Yard stage in shadows of the gorgeous Blackfriars Abbey this Saturday from 8pm. A must see.

3. Tipperary: Sheila Stone - Charon's Boats / June 16 & 17 10am- 5pm

This chilling work by ceramic artist Sheila Stone pays tribute to the 5,000 lives lost on the Mediterranean in 2016. A reference to Charon – the boatman of Greek mythology who was paid to ferry the dead to the next life, the artwork references the mothers, fathers, children, grandmothers and grandfathers who paid for a doomed passage to a better life. On exhibition for a limited time only at The Source Arts Centre Thurles.

4. Kilkenny: The Breadwinner Exhibition / June 16 & 17

The Oscar-nominated animation by Kilkenny-based animation house Cartoon Saloon is the subject of a fascinating exhibition at the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny City this weekend.  Curated by Anna O’Sullivan, the exhibition takes a look at the creative process from animation behind the scenes materials.

5.  Co. Waterford - Immrama / June 16 & 17

Dedicated to travel writing, music and entertainment since its inception in 2003, Immrama has several free events over the course of this weekend. Check out their programme for a full breakdown of events.
