Viewing surges on Netflix's The Crown

The Crown series on Netflix has received a new influx of streams following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Between Friday September 9th and Sunday September 11th ,viewing in the U.K. increased by 800%, with the series jumping to the "top 10" list in many other countries.

Claire Foy plays the young Queen Elizabeth in season one and season two of the series, and the actress earned an Emmy in 2018 for her portrayal of the monarch. Oscar wining actress Olivia Colman then takes the role in seasons three and four, also earning herself an Emmy for the part in 2021 .

While the show is considered historical fiction, and is not affiliated with the royal family, it has been praised for its exceptional storytelling. Viewers are given a never before seen insight into the complexity of the monarchy and its various strengths and weaknesses. The private lives of the royal family, as well as the turbulent history of the U.K. are examined, making the show a unique mix of politics and personal relationships, of love affairs and current affairs.

The Crown season 5 is due for release in November 2022 with Imelda Staunton taking over the role as an older Queen Elizabeth.
