Teen girl involved in Kilkenny car hijacking accident will require further surgery

A teenage passenger who was inside a stolen vehicle when it crashed last week will require further surgery.

One person died and four were injured on Friday last when the stolen vehicle in question was involved in a head-on collision on the N77 shortly before 4 pm.

It is believed the father of the teenage girl had left the keys to the family's Kia Sportage in the ignition so his daughter could keep warm and listen to the radio when the opportune thief took off in the vehicle less than an hour before the fatal accident.

The family of the teenage girl, who has special needs, remain by her bedside at an unnamed Dublin hospital. The full extent of the unnamed 16-year-old's injuries, who has already received surgical treatment, is not yet known. A family source has informed the Irish Independent that she is currently "comfortable."

37-year-old Dale Fogarty from Castlecomer Co. Kilkenny stole the car in question before being involved in a head-on accident with another vehicle that had three passengers on board.

The three occupants of that vehicle, a female and male in their forties and a male in his sixties, were taken to St Luke's General Hospital Kilkenny for medical treatment. Their injuries are non-life threatening.

Mr Fogarty had previously been known to Gardaí. In 2012 he survived a stabbing incident at a Valentine's Day party in Kilkenny city.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to either of these incidents to come forward to assist them with their ongoing investigations.
