Doctor clarifies how many times you should poo per day

It's not a pleasant business but it is an important part of health.

Your poo is part of your body's digestion, and problems with your gut health can result in too many, or too few, trips to the bathroom.

Now a doctor has explained how often you should poo per day.

Dr Tim Spector, a Professor in Genetic Epidemiology and Founder of the nutrition company Zoe says that over half of the population poos once a day, almost a third twice a day, while one in ten poo three times a day. There are some who go five times a day and many people just go once a week.

So what really is healthy?

"Studies have shown that we tend to poo between three times a day and three times a week, so anything within that is pretty much healthy," says Dr, Spector, 'cause it may be individualised."

Dr Spector says that "on average it takes 28 hours" for food to travel from the mouth through to the toilet, but if you are going extremely frequently such as more than four times per day, you should consult your doctor as "there may be something more going on". On the flip side, if you are struggling to pass poo, or it's coming out in small parts, you may be constipated and may need to change your diet to include more fibre.
