Doctor explains what happens to your belly button if it goes unwashed

A doctor in the UK has revealed what can happen to your belly button if it goes unwashed.

Doctor Karen Rajan, a surgical doctor for the NHS, revealed that not properly washing your belly button as you shower can result in the formation of what he calls 'belly button jewels.' Yes, you read that correctly.

Explaining further, Doctor Rajan said that these "omphaloliths" - to give them their correct medical term - form from a build-up of sweat, cells, oils, fluff, bacteria and dead skin cells.

The result is the formation of a hard, irregularly shaped black or dark brown stone buried deep within our belly button.

We're not gonna lie, this is pretty disgusting.

The doc noted that even those with protruding navels are not exempt from the formation of omphaloliths, meaning we all must regularly wash out our belly buttons while in the shower if we want to avoid a build-up of this material.

Dr Karan's TikTok has racked up over 311,000 views and over 18,500 likes to date.
