Massive Irish support for Making a Murderer petition

Netflix documentary Making A Murderer has been causing a huge stir in Ireland over the past fortnight. The controversial ten-part documentary tells the story of murder accused Steven Avery who previously served 18 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.

An online petition was set up at Change.Org to free Steven Avery and has received over 350,000 signatures so far. The petition creator Michael Seyedian spoke to Joe.ie and revealed that over 7,500 Irish people have signed the online petition.

The country with the largest number of signatories is the US with 41% of the 353,000 and counting signatures. The online document has been signed by an incredible 144 different countries and its number of signatures continues to grow.

However, it has been revealed this week that US President Barack Obama is powerless to intervene as presidential pardons can only be used on federal convictions. In Steven Avery's case, it was a state criminal offence. Appeals for state convictions can only be filed in local courts and petitioned to the state's governer.
