A nine-year-old girl has come up with a heartwarming way to speak with loved ones who have passed away.

The new 'Postbox to Heaven' at Gedling Crematorium, Nottinghamshire, allows people to write letters to deceased relatives and friends.

Matilda Handy missed her grandparents dearly and approached the Crematorium with the idea.

"I'm very upset and it's just a very nice way to express my feelings and send a letter to them and to say how much I love them," she told ITV Central.

Matilda's mother Leanne told the news outlet that the response from the community has been incredibly positive, and many locals have asked Matilda if they can use the letterbox too.

Crematorium Site Manager, Giulia McDonough told ITV Central that the postbox has really "captured the imagination" of so many people. "We put a post about it on our Facebook page on 12 December, and within just a couple of days we had more than 16,000 people viewing the message," she said.

The postbox is serviced by the crematorium staff, not the Royal Mail service, so no stamp is needed for letters.

Matilda and her family hope the postbox can become a permanent fixture so people can write to their loved ones throughout the year.
