Stress one of the biggest factors of forgetfulness

Absent-minded people in Ireland forget on average 1,095 things a year, according to a new survey.

The Kicker survey of two-thousand people found the top five things people forget daily in Ireland are why you went into a room, what you were going to say, names and passwords.

Social media and not exercising your brain, are among the things people blame for forgetfulness but experts say stress is one of the biggest reasons people may experience increased forgetfulness.

Being forgetful isn't all bad though because it's actually an important function of the brain, according to clinical psychologist,Dr Malie Coyne. She says there's only so much information you can take in.

"For our brains to work optimally we have to think of the basics of physical and brain health. Trying to get a good sleep, because sleep helps us get rid of the memories that we don't need to hold onto, it's like a brain clear out"
