21,302 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed.

884 patients are in hospital with the virus - 90 are in ICU.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan says the current infection levels are having a major impact on essential services across all sectors.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education has confirmed schools will reopen on Thursday

It says the public health advice is that safety measures currently in place are effective and appropriate for the new term.

Minister Norma Foley met with unions earlier to discuss if the reopening should be pushed back.
