58% rise in eviction notices in 2022

There's been a surge in the number of tenants being given notice to vacate their rental properties.

The Residential Tenancies Board is reporting a 58% increase in the number of eviction notices issued in the first 6 months of 2022, compared with the final 6 months of last year.

Almost 3,000 notices to quit were issued between January and the end of June, with the RTB saying the main reason is landlord's quitting the private rental market so they can sell their properties.

Sinn Fein, who obtained the figures, is now calling for a further ban on evictions, like that enacted during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Housing spokesperson Eoin O'Broin says there needs to be a crisis response.

"The kind of things that I think the Minister needs to look at is the re-introduction of the ban on eviction, an acceleration on the 'tenants-in-situ' scheme where local authorities purchase private rental properties where there is a tenant in it with a notice to quit.

"We do need to see the acceleration of social housing, including high quality modular and vacant homes."
