Bishop of Waterford and Lismore causes controversy with cervical cancer vaccine comments

Bishop Phonsie Cullinan claims the cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil is "only 70% safe."

In an interview with the Irish Times, he says parents are being pressurised into agreeing to have it administered to their daughters and the money should be put towards helping young people stay chaste.

He says the experience of the Regret group of parents who have concerns about it should not be "rubbished."

The vaccine has the support of the World Health Organisation as well as other scientific groups.

The HSE has described his comments as ‘outdated, unhelpful and ill-informed’.
