A child is in hospital with serious injuries following a dog attack in Wexford.
The incident happened in the Enniscorthy area yesterday afternoon.
The Irish Coast Guard’s Rescue 117 helicopter air lifted the boy to Crumlin Children’s Hospital where he is receiving treatment.
According to the Irish Independent, Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene.
The dog has since been destroyed.
Public Affairs Correspondent for the Irish Independent, Amy Molloy, says neighbours tried to come to the child's aid during the 'vicious' attack.
"It's understood a young boy, believed to be around 8 or 9 years of age, was playing with a group of friends in an estate in Enniscorthy, when the dog who appeared to be loose attacked him.
"I spoke to some locals in the area, they said it was quite vicious and quite awful.
"I understand that a number of neighbours tried to pull the dog off the young boy."
Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
