The dog has since been destroyed.

Public Affairs Correspondent for the Irish Independent, Amy Molloy, says neighbours tried to come to the child's aid during the 'vicious' attack.

"It's understood a young boy, believed to be around 8 or 9 years of age, was playing with a group of friends in an estate in Enniscorthy, when the dog who appeared to be loose attacked him.

"I spoke to some locals in the area, they said it was quite vicious and quite awful.
