Calls for the Government to give an extra €20 in social welfare payments in the budget

The Government is being asked to give €20 extra in social welfare payments on budget day.

The call comes from Social Justice Ireland in its pre-budget submissions.

It says it must be part of the measures put in place to support households during the rising cost of living.

Spokesperson for Social Justice Ireland Susanne Rogers says it needs to be implemented to lift people out of poverty:

"The increase in core social welfare rates in Budget 2023, that has to be front and centre, and it has to be a minimum of €20."

"In light of what we have experienced now in the last 6 to 9 months  in terms of the rising costs."

"The costs that are rising are not that luxuries that are going up; it's energy and food."
