A Carlow Garda Station is to reopen

The process to reopen 6 former Garda stations has officially begun.

The acting Garda Commissioner has decided to re-open stations Leighlinbridge in Co. Carlow; at Stepaside and Rush in Dublin; Donard in Co. Wicklow; Ballinspittle in Co. Cork and Bawnboy, Co. Cavan.

The cabinet was briefed on the decision yesterday.

A Garda report says reopening these stations on a pilot basis gives them a good geographical spread of extra coverage across the country.

Carlow TD Pat Deering has said the community can now look forward to a safer future after working tirelessly for their garda station to be restored.

Deputy Deering said: “A report from the Garda Commissioner has found that Leighlinbridge Garda station should reopen, and the Commissioner has written to the Office of Public Works to progress the opening.

“This is a Christmas wish come true for the area and means the whole community can look forward to a safer future with a dedicated garda presence back on our streets.

“It has always been my view that the closure of Leighlinbridge Garda station was the wrong decision.

“The station’s closure has damaged the local community, leaving them feeling significantly less safe and less secure.
