Citizen's Assembly hears from both sides of the abortion debate

The Citizens Assembly has heard from both sides of the campaign on the abortion issue this afternoon.

It's part of the Assembly's extended discussions on the future of the 8th Amendment.

In the opening session, the citizens heard from Professor Veronica O'Keane from "Doctors for Choice" as well as Dr. Orla Halpenny from "Doctors for Life".

Ide Nic Mathuna, project manager for the "Youth Defence" and pro-life advocate, spoke to Beat News from the assembly.

"The whole idea of a Citizen's Assembly, where a group of people are asked to sit down and decide whether certain citizens should have the right to life or not is just farcical",  she said.

"But it being what it is, the government are attempting to pass the buck and pass responsibility for decisions that maybe they do not want to make."

"We've had testimonies of people who have had personal experiences with abortion and the abortion culture and they have shared what it's really like to have an abortion culture in your country and what it would be like if we didn't have the eighth amendment in this country."
