Community in 'shock' following tragic death of a 13-year-old in Kilkenny

Tributes are being paid to a young boy who died following a tragic accident at a school in Kilkenny.

It's understood the 13-year-old was playing hurling at lunchtime on Monday when he was hit by a sliotar.

He's been named at Harry Byrne from the small village of Gowran in Co. Kilkenny.

Harry was taken from St Kieran's College to St Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí say a report will be prepared for the coroner's court.

Speaking to Beat news, Mayor of Kilkenny City, Councillor Andrew McGuinness, says the whole community is in shock:

"Absolutely devastating, as Mayor of Kilkenny i am saddened and shocked by the news."

"Thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the young man who died playing the sport he loved in his school."

"It's a very sad day for Kilkenny, St Kieran's College and all of his friends."
