Cristiano Ronaldo dealing with 'greatest pain' after death of newborn son

Cristiano Ronaldo is dealing with "the greatest pain that any parent can feel" after the death of his baby boy.

Yesterday, the Manchester United striker announced on social media that he and his partner Georgina Rodriguez lost one of their newborn twins.

The couple announced last October that they were expecting twins - a boy and a girl.

In a joint statement, the 37-year-old and his partner wrote:

"It is with deep sadness we have to announce that our baby boy passed away"

"It is the greatest pain that any parent can feel."

The pair were expecting twins, as say their newborn girl is the only good to come from this tragedy.

"Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness"

Ronaldo ended the statement by saying they are looking for privacy at this difficult time, and that they will always love their "angel" baby boy.

Tributes have been paid on social media, from fans, friends and soccer clubs to the football legend.

Man United tweeted "Your pain is our pain, Cristiano. Sending love and strength to you and the family at this time."

While rival club Liverpool said "All of us here at Liverpool FC send our deepest condolences to you, Georgina and the family."

United teammate Marcus Rashford also paid his respects to the couple saying his "thoughts are with you and Georgina brother. I’m so sorry."
