Drivers caught speeding by more than 30km/h could soon face a fine of €2,000.

It's part of the Transport Minister's plans for tougher penalties depending on how much people are speeding by.

The latest proposals would start at a €60 fine and 2 penalty points for people going 10 kilometres an hour over the limit.

The Irish Times reports that Shane Ross will ask the cabinet to approve the plans tomorrow.
