€30k knock out: money awarded to man after pub boxing machine injury

€30,000 has been awarded to a man after he fractured his wrist while using a ‘boxing machine’ in a local pub.

According to The Irish Daily Star, Liam Murphy, 39, of The Dale, Woodpark, Ballinteer, Dublin 16, visited Flannery’s Pub on Camden Street after attending All-Ireland hurling final in 2013.

Fintan Hurley, counsel for Mr.Murphy, reported to the Circuit Criminal Court that there was a boxing machine in the bar that you could pay €2 to play.

A ball dropped down, Mr. Hurley said, and the machine recorded a score on how hard the ball was punched.

Mr.Murphy said that he had a competition on the game with a number of people, and hit the ball seven or eight times, although he did admit to the court that he had a few drinks beforehand.

The next morning, Mr.Murphy told the court, his hand and wrist felt sore. He then went to a doctor who had referred him to the hospital, where he was told he had broken a bone in his right wrist.

According to reports, the injury was severe enough that Mr.Murphy had surgery on his wrist, and was in a cast for several weeks.

Mr.Murphy sued Flannery’s pub, as well as the suppliers of the machine, Halpol Ltd. Mr.Murphy was awarded €30,000 damages by Judge Jacqueline Linnane, who said that it was inappropriate to have such a dangerous machine in a public house.
