17:30: Our first South East candidate in the South East has been elected. Johnny Mythen is the first Sinn Féin TD in 102 years.

16:40: In Tipperary they're still awaiting the result of the first count, now expected to arrive until at 6pm, an hour ahead of initially expected.

16:30: Sinn Féin & Cork South Central candidate, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, is the first to be elected!

14:55: Speaking to Beat News Deputy Cullinane says he’s delighted with how well the party is doing across the board.


14:10: Unbelievable tally in Leo Varadkar's constituency...

14:00: 'There's a change in the air', according to Sinn Féin's Kathleen Funchion.

13:55: Green MEP and Tramore-native Grace O'Sullivan says their candidate Marc O'Cathasaigh, who is on 7.3%, is in a good position.

13:04: The shopping trollies are out in Kilkenny!

12:50: BREAKING - Director of services for Fine Gael, Martin Lawlor, has conceded that Fine Gael will lose a seat in Wexford.

12:40: In Waterford with tallies completed, its David Cullinane (SF) ahead by a country mile with 38%, followed by Mary Butler (FF) 13%, Matt Shanahan (IND) 9%, John Cummins (FG) 8.5%.

12:35: With 71% of tallies completed in Tipp it's Lowry 16%, Browne 12%, Mattie 10%, Kelly 9%, Cahill 9%

12:30: In Kilkenny, with 74% of boxes tallied, Kathleen Funchion (SF) leads the way at 24%, Jennifer Murnane O'Connor is at 17%, John McGuinness (FF) is at 14%, Pat Deering (FG) holds 11%, while Bobby Alyward clings onto the last seat with 7% of the tallied vote.

12:22: In Wexford, tallies show that Johnny Mythen (SF) is at 25.93%, James Browne (FF) is at 14.66%, Malcolm Byrne (FF) is at 12.20%, Michael D’Arcy (FG) is at 11.18% and Paul Kehoe FG is at 10.81%. Labour leader Brendan Howlin is in serious trouble at 5.8%. 90% of boxes have been tallied.

12:16: Meanwhile in the near-future...

12:12: What's the last thing you'd expect to see at a count centre? It's gotta be a Stag Party. Ohh, wait...

12:06: Kathleen Funchion's dad, Phil, outlines why he thinks Sinn Fein are doing so well.

11:40 am: In Dublin, Sinn Féin supporters are in jovial spirits, singing Come Out Ye' Black and Tans.

11:35 am: In Waterford, we’re just past the 70% mark of the first Tally and David Cullinane is still top of the polls.

11:33 am: Boxes continue to be opened in the Carlow Kilkenny Constituency at Lyrath Hotel. Earlier tallies - with 92 Carlow boxes opened - showed Jennifer Murnane O'Connor on 31%, Kathleen Funchion on 26% and Pat Deering on 19%. It seems the exit poll was correct in that constituency, with Sinn Fein coming out on top.

11:16 am: Tipp tallies also show that deceased candidate, Marese Skeehan, received 76 votes so far.

11:13 am: Tallies are showing Lowry in first position in Tipperary with 16% of the vote, Browne is second with 12%, and McGrath third with 11%.

11:10 am: 92 Carlow boxes opened as of 11am. Jennifer Murnane O'Connor is at 31.25%, Kathleen Funchion at 26.45% and Pat Deering at 19.46%

10:47 am: Here's the latest and most comprehensive Waterford tally. As it stands, David Cullinane (SF) is heading the count, followed by Mary Butler (FF) and John Cummins (FG).

10:46 am: 22% of the boxes have been tallied in Tipperary, and Beat’s Kevin Galvin says early tallies show Michael Lowry in an expected lead on 16%, with Sinn Féin’s Martin Browne - who lost his local council seat in 2019 - just four per cent behind. Mattie McGrath is on 11%, Jackie Cahill follows with 10% and Alan Kelly on 8% currently make up the remaining three seats, but it looks early on like something resembling the 2016 election, with a dogfight for the four seats left after Lowry is elected.

There have however been problems tallying some areas, notably Carrick-on-Suir, with turned and crumpled papers making things extremely difficult for the tallymen and women trying to build an early picture in the South-East of the county.

10:26 am: In Waterford, one Sinn Fein candidate is miles ahead. Here's what Aoife had to say:

10:10 am: In Waterford,  some early figures in the first count of the Comeragh Electoral indicating a strong lead for Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane. Early figures have him at 34.4%. He’s followed by independent Matt Shanahan on 17.3% and Fianna Fáil’s Mary Butler on 16.5%. Fine Gael's two candidates are next on the list with John Cummins on 9.8% and Damien Geoghegan on 7.8%.
