EPA say drinking water quality needs to be improved

The Environmental Protection Agency is calling on the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage - to act to improve the quality of private drinking water.

According to the EPA, 20% of small private supplies were not monitored in 2019.

They say bacteria in our water supplies can make people very ill - particularly young children, the elderly, or those who are immunocompromised.

These supply monitors are put in place to ensure the supply of clean and safe drinking water.

Speaking to Beat News, Senior Inspector with the EPA Michelle Minehan says more regulation is needed to protect our health

"We're generally talking about bacteria like E Coli, but there's a particular form of E Coli called VTECD that can cause very severe illness.

"About 40% of those that develop VTEC end up in hospital, which is obviously very serious, and another 5% of those can get kidney failure."
