Former county GAA star appears in court charged with manslaughter

A former GAA star has appeared in court charged with manslaughter over the death of a man in Co Antrim at the weekend.

34-year-old father-of-two Aaron Law was found with injuries on Main Street in the village of Portglenone, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He died later that day in Antrim Area Hospital.

Today, 41-year-old Fergal Gerard Doherty of Main Street in Portglenone, appeared before Ballymena Magistrates’ Court sitting in Antrim.

According to Derry Live, following an altercation on October 30th, "Mr Law subsequently fell and hit his head on the road, remaining unconscious in the middle of the road for a period of time described in court as being around 10-15 minutes."

It continued to say that Mr Doherty "had shown 'grief and remorse' throughout and that he had 'wept' during his police interview.

"A bail application made on behalf of the defendant by defence counsel Joe Brolly was opposed by police, with an officer outlining the reasons for his opposition along with details of the alleged incident."

He faced one charge of manslaughter in relation to the death of Mr Law in Portglenone on October 30th.

Fergal Gerard Doherty is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Derry county team, with whom he won a National League title in 2008.

He was also nominated for an All Star four times.

Mr Doherty is due to appear in court via video link on Dec 1st 2022.
