GAA stars say there's a 'harmful relationship' between games and alcohol

Ireland's top camogie, football and hurling players say there's a harmful relationship between the GAA and drinking.

An annoymous survey of over 700 active inter-county players found high rates of binge drinking.

Two-thirds had experienced alcohol-related harm within the last 12 months.

Dr Kieran Murray, the lead author of the study, says drinking was heavily linked with celebrations.

"In the responding comments they talked about how underage drinking is associated with the GAA.

"One player commented on how they'd see people as young as 11 or 12 in the pub drinking, and celebrating intercounty wins.

"Binge drinking is also associated with the association."
