Gardaí investigate alleged attack on referee in Wexford

Wexford GAA and the Gardaí are to investigate an alleged attack on a referee on Sunday.

The incident is believed to have occurred following a Junior A football game at Whiterock Hill on Sunday morning.

According to the Independent, Wexford Town Gardaí were called to the home venue of St. Joseph's to investigate an alleged assault on the match referee.

It reports that the '"referee is one of the most experienced referees in the county, and news of his alleged assault has sent shockwaves throughout the GAA in county.

"It was one of the busiest weekends games-wise in the county, with the final round of group games being played off."

The county board released a statement last night condemning "any threatening or abusive behaviour" towards referees and wishing the match officials a "speedy recovery".

The news comes as calls are increasing for more protection for referees.
