Government funding for Waterford Airport under threat

Funding for a regional airport is at risk due to not operating commercial flights.

Sinn Fein TD David Cullinane has learned that state funding for Waterford Airport is under serious threat.

The Minister for Transport has previously withheld additional financial support as it was connected to commercial flights.

Waterford Deputy David Cullinane explains:

"The current funding for the airport is just over one million euro a year.

"A substantial part of that is to ensure that it can offer a commercial carrier service, and it hasn't done that for some time now.

"That presents challenges to the department being able to fund the airport.

"My understanding is that funds are being withheld because of a lack of a commercial operator."
