Government is considering lowering the gender identity age to 16

The Taoiseach says lowering the gender identity age would be a major help to young trans people.

The government is looking at lowering the age where a person can self-determine their gender from 18 to 16.

This would allow young people to change gender more easily.

Micheal Martin says the move would benefit young trans people. He also said young trans people need more support.

"I think we should consult with young trans people to hear their views. Many have endured unacceptable bullying so we need to inform the wider community and make sure that there's greater acceptance and greater support for the young people out there who are going through challenging times."
