Home of Catriona Carey raided over alleged fraud offences

The home of Catriona Carey has been raided by officers in connection with fraud allegations.

The former Ireland hockey player and sister to Kilkenny hurling star DJ Carey was the focus of an RTÉ Investigates programme in which it was alleged that thousands of Euros were fraudulently exchanged under the pretence that Carey's company would purchase distressed mortgages from homeowners at a discounted rate.

Clients were asked to pay 20 to 30% of the loaned value upfront in order to secure the new loan through Careysfort, which they were falsely promised would lower repayments and enable them to stay in their homes.

Over a two year period, approximately €400,000 from at least 18 clients was deposited into Careysfort Asset Estates account(s), of which just €488.10 remains - meaning there is little to nothing left to repay the company's clients.

Members of the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau and the Carlow/Kilkenny division operated the search at a residence in Co. Kilkenny, seizing a number of documents.

According to the Irish Independent, no arrests were made and investigations are ongoing.
