HSE Exploring Plans To Upgrade St. Luke's Maternity Ward

Plans have been mooted to upgrade the maternity unit at St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny.

It comes after St Luke's consultant Obstetrician, Ray O’Sullivan, voiced his concerns about the possibility that women who have just given birth may find themselves on corridors in St Luke’s Hospital.

HSE said that it is currently exploring all options to increase the bed capacity at the site, including both onsite and offsite options.

Some essential works to upgrade the maternity unit to improve the overall environment for women and their babies is being planned.

An area that has been out of use for nine years will also be reconverted back to an inpatient ward for excess capacity.

The HSE says there was a 6% increase in overall admissions to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny last year.
