Investigations launched after alleged attack on a referee in Wexford at the weekend

There have been calls for a serious reform of policy when it comes to pitch-side attacks at GAA matches.

Gardaí in Wexford are investigating an alleged assault on a referee that took place at Whiterock Hill on Sunday morning.

It follows a raft of similar incidents seen in both inter-county and club matches recently, including a serious assault on a match official in Roscommon and an alleged eye gouging incident during Armagh and Galway's All Ireland Football Quater Final.

Chairperson of Wexford GAA Michéal Martin says what we've seen recently, reflects a broader societal change:

"We've seen it in the GAA, we've seen it across sport, society, social media."

"It's going to take policy makers to get together and get serious about it."

Meanwhile, Wexford Councillor Gary Laffan says:

"There's a Garda investigation underway and it is definitely disappointing for us people who are involved in GAA in Wexford"

A Garda source says the referee sustained injuries, but made his own way to hospital and an investigation has been launched by both the GAA and local Gardaí.
