Ireland's first checkout-free grocery store opens its doors

The county's first completely contactless store opened its doors in Dublin yesterday.

Customers of the high-tech store in Clonskeagh must scan an app that's linked to their bank account to enter the shop.

Cameras then record what shoppers are picking up and bill it straight from their phones, meaning customers can leave the store without ever stopping at a till.

Developed for Irish betting company Flutter by Compass Group Ireland, the store stocks fresh meals including a selection of hot and chilled dishes to-go, as well as drinks and confectionery items.

Deirdre O’Neill, Managing Director at Compass Ireland, told the Irish Mirror that trials of the new foodservices solution have been very successful.

“We’re incredibly excited by this new frictionless store technology, and are proud that our Irish operation is leading the way.

“We constantly look to offer the most convenient catering solutions in workplaces and in education and leisure spaces. Now, people can pop into a store, pick up the food they like, and go – it’s a great flexible solution for busy workers.”
