'Ireland’s housing situation desperately needs to be changed' - Tipp TD Martin Browne

Ireland’s housing situation desperately needs to be changed.

That’s according to a Tipperary TD, after a new report showed that councils are taking over two years to turn around vacant properties.

The Local Government Audit service says there were 5 thousand vacant social housing units just before the Pandemic according to the Irish Examiner.

The report says the turnaround time in Dublin City Council was 104 weeks, and as high as 139 in Sligo County Council.

Speaking to Beat News, Tipperary Sinn Féin TD Martin Browne says it's also an issue in his constituency.

"It could be faster but a lot of the time by the time the council gets the go-ahead to draw money there's 12 or 18 months gone and as soon as the council does get the go-ahead it's going and get that property turned around as soon as possible."
