Kilkenomics Festival kicks off in Kilkenny today

Some of the top names in comedy and economics will be in the region this weekend.

The annual Kilkenomics festival gets underway today and runs until Sunday.

There'll be guest speakers, workshops and performances in the marble city.

The festival has been running for seven years now, with this weekend marking their 8th year.

Some of the guests for the weekend include:

  • Yanis Varoufakis, former finance minister of Greece. He co-founded DiEM25 (Democracy in Europe Movement), a pan-European, cross-border movement of democrats.
  • Pippa Malmgren an American policy analyst. She served as Special Assistant to the President of the United States for Economic Policy on the National Economic Council and is a former member of the U.S. President’s Working Group on Financial Markets. She is the founder of the DRPM Group and co-founder of H Robotics.
  • Rory Sutherland is widely regarded as one of the most creative and influential minds in the advertising business, Rory Sutherland is Vice-Chairman, Ogilvy UK, part of one of the biggest agencies in the world. His sharp and witty TED talks on life and business have been viewed by millions and his Wiki Man column in The Spectator is essential reading for anyone with an interest on how technology affects us.

One of the organisers of the festival, Naoise Nunn, says "the first year it was on, it was in the midst of the financial crisis in 2010, and subtly over the last 8 years as things have improved, the direction of the festival has changed and so have the titles of the shows"
