Lisa Smith will be sentenced for ISIS membership later this morning.

At her sentence hearing earlier this month, the former Irish soldier’s barrister pleaded with the judges not to send her to prison.

Lisa Smith is the first person to be prosecuted for and convicted of being a member of a terror organisation in a foreign land.

Having converted to Islam before leaving the Irish Defence Forces, she claimed she was answering a religious call when she went to Syria in 2015.

However, she was found to have been a member of ISIS during the four years she spent there. She was cleared of a charge of financing terrorism.

At her sentence hearing earlier this month, her barrister asked the court to consider a non-custodial sentence.

Lisa was described as a “very vulnerable” person in various psychological assessments and the judges were told she has a 5 year old daughter to care for.

The maximum penalty for what she did is eight years in prison and in a few hours, she’ll find out what the judges feel is an appropriate sentence for her.
