Man, 80, dies after collision between car and van in Co Cork

A man has died following a road crash in Cork.

The collision between a car and a van happened on the N71 between Ballydehob and Bantry just before 10 o'clock last night.

The man, aged 80, was fatally injured and his body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will take place today. His passenger, 10, was injured and taken to CUH with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 42-year-old man, received minor injuries.

The road remains closed this morning while the scene is examined.

It brings to five the number of people who have died on our roads in the last two days.

Yesterday a man in his late 70s and a woman in her 60s died in two separate crashes in Cork city and Castlebar in County Mayo.

On Wednesday an 84-year-old man and his 70-year-old wife died when their car was involved a collision with a truck in Limerick.

While on Monday - a woman in her 50's died after she was struck by a car while walking on the hard shoulder with a child on a bike in Cahir in County Tipperary.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone why may have witnessed the collision or has information to contact Bantry Garda Station on 027 - 20860, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
