Man exposes himself as men hijack gender-based violence zoom, Carlow Cllr says

A Carlow Councillor says she was left shocked after a man exposed himself to over 150 women on a zoom meeting this week.

Councillor Adrienne Wallace had organised the discussion on gender-based violence when a group of men joined the call, in what she believes was an organised attack.

The panel discussion included contributions from Noeline Blackwell of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre and Orla O'Connor from the National Women's Council.

Speaking to Beat news, the People Before Profit Councillor explains what happened:

"They were singing songs, screeching, one man even exposed himself which was really upsetting for a number of people for obvious reasons."

"We moved very quickly, and booted them from the meeting and they were banned and a report has been sent, but all that did was actually motivated us to keep doing what we are doing."

A similar incident took place earlier this month, as another man, made a similar attempt to disrupt an online vigil held for Ashling Murphy, who was murdered in Tullamore, Co Offaly.

It's understood the man exposed himself and was visible masturbating on camera in the Zoom video call, which was attended by around 90 women.

Speaking to Beat news, People Before Profits Adrienne Wallace, says she believes it was a desperate attempt to undermine women’s rights:

"This is a minority of men in Ireland who are losing all their power, and they are very aware of it."

"They really recognise that they are against the tide, they are against the current mood and that there is a movement emerging that really is going to do everything in its power to smash sexism and I think that what we saw last night, a few people trying to clutch back to an old Ireland, which really nobody has time for anymore."
