Man given suspended sentence following assault of woman convicted for his daughters murder

The father of murdered two-year-old toddler Santina Cawley has been given a suspended sentence after admitting assault and causing harm to the woman convicted of his daughter's murder.

37 year old Michael Cawley with an address at Leeside Apartments, Bachelors Quay, Cork, pleaded guilty earlier this month.

38-year-old Karen Harrington was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Santina Cawley last month.

Cork District Court heard how Michael Cawley spotted Karen Harrington boarding a bus at Merchant's Quay in the city and went on board the bus, caught her and threw her to the ground before kicking her several times in the chest and stomach.

After the assault Cawley went to the Bridewell Garda Station where he told Gardaí what he had done and he had co-operated fully with the investigation.

The judge read a Victim Impact Statement, but noted Ms Harrington had devoted much of her statement to matters that didn't concern the judge in this case.

Michael Cawley was sentenced to ten months in jail, but the judge suspended the sentence in its entirety on condition that he keep the peace for a period of two years.
