Man in hospital following 2 fires in the south east overnight

A man in his 70s is in a serious condition in hospital following a house fire in Waterford city overnight.

The fire broke out around 4 am in the property at St Herblain park.

Three people were in the house at the time.

A couple in their 40s escaped without harm.

The man in his 70s was brought to University Hospital Waterford where he is being treated for smoke inhalation and is described as being in a serious but stable condition.

Fire crews from Waterford and Tramore attended the scene.

A technical examination has been carried out and the cause of the fire is believed to be electrical.

Fire crews from Waterford also attended a house fire in Mullinavat in Co.Kilkenny in the early hours of this morning. Nobody was in the property at the time.
