Man jailed for 11 years for killing a man in Kilkenny in 2006

A man has been jailed for eleven years for killing a man in Co Kilkenny in 2006.

Martin Kelly, from Church Road, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, was prosecuted years later, after his ex-girlfriend took back an alibi she gave him.

Gerry Nolan died in the early hours of July 24th 2006 after his mobile home was set on fire while he slept inside after spending the day drinking with friends in a local pub.

A close relative of Martin Kelly’s was mistakenly identified as a suspect but no charges were brought at the time.

Mobile phone analysis linked Martin to the scene but his girlfriend at the time provided him with an alibi.

She told Gardaí he was with her that night but years later, in 2015, she admitted she had lied about that and even revealed that he told her he killed Gerry.

The court heard this happened after their relationship ended and Martin started seeing another woman.

The now 35 year old was charged with murder last year but his plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter was accepted in March and he was jailed for eleven years on Monday.
