Mothers to be protected from redundancy after maternity leave

New mothers who are returning to work after being on maternity leave are set to be protected from redundancy.

In the UK, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy have began looking at stretching legal protection against redundancy to up to six months for new mothers.

It is also reviewing whether or not the same protection should apply to parents who are returning from adoption or parental leave.

According to the BBC, one in nine women stated that upon returning to work following giving birth, they were either fired or made redundant.

Charlie Rosier, Co-founder of Cuckooz Nest said “It’s great to see the Government taking this issue seriously, however, given the quite scandalous nature of this matter, we would call on them to consider extending this term to a full 12-months and providing this protection for fathers as well.

"It simply isn’t good enough that the careers of so many successful, professional women are effectively being discarded for no other reason than choosing to have a baby."
