New campaign for road safety launched in the south east as winter approaches

Drivers are being reminded to 'light up' and ensure their rear lights are on, as darker evenings approach.

The 'See and Be Seen' campaign urges motorists to remember to turn all lights, especially if their car has a 'daytime running' light function.

Latest Garda figures show that 109 people lost their lives in road crashes so far this year and more than 2-and-a-half thousand fixed charged notices have been issued for dangerous driving.

Speaking to Beat News, John McDarby, Carlow Road Safety officer says drivers need to be aware of all road users:

Out on the roads at the moment we have pedestrians and vulnerable road users. Pedestrian's come in all sizes from little children who might run out from between parked cars to middle aged people and also maybe not so middle aged people because they're walking on their mobile phone and they'll set out to cross a road not being aware of whats around them."

He also had these tips for road users;

"Working lights on everything, everyone thinks of cars but I'm also talking about working lights on everything that moves; bicycles and e scooters and all that, the second thing is high vis clothing, it's definitely worth spending some money on it. It is really superb and is so important for road safety."
