New Suicide Prevention and Self Harm Plan for Co. Wexford

The launch has taken place of a new Suicide Prevention and Self Harm Plan for Co. Wexford.

The initiative is called "Connecting for Life Wexford" and is developed by the National Office for Suicide Prevention along with Wexford County Council and the Ferns Diocesan Youth Service.

Recent figures have shown the county has the highest suicide rate in the country per capita.

Speaking to Beat News Minster Howlin explained: "There's a huge range of voluntary bodies involved in it - from helplines to people who patrol for example in the Marine Watch - who patrol the Quay side - to talk to people who might be contemplating suicide."

"All of that is really important if Wexford's statistics are to improve and that we are to - not only become close to the national average - but hopefully much lower than the national average through coordinated effort."
