Odd Socks For Katie - Road Safety Campaign draws to a close

Today Saturday the 25th February at 2pm a meeting took place in John Roberts square in Waterford to bring the road safety campaign #OddSocksForKatie to a close.

16 year old Katie Murphy from Waterford lost her life tragically in a car accident on October 5th 2016 on the Tramore coast road.

For some unknown reason Katie always wore odd socks. After her passing, one of Katie's close friends decided to wear odd socks as a tribute to her life.

Katie's parents Hilary and Vivienne invited anybody who wished to take part and wear odd socks for the month of January in remembrance of their daughter Katie and share their pictures on the Facebook page.

"We hope that this small symbolic gesture might be a useful way of starting important conversations about the dangers of speed and the sense of loss that people are experiencing at the moment - If nothing else, Odd Socks For Katie can just be a fun way for us to celebrate Katie's life and keep her in our thoughts".

Speaking at today's event, Katie's father Hilary told Beat News: "We hope to get the basics across to kids - not using your mobile phone when you're driving, not exceeding speed limits, always wear your seat belt, but more importantly that you are responsible for your own safety, if safety is at risk speak up, ask the driver to slow down or to stop and leave the car".

The Odd Socks campaign has ended for this year, but Katie's parents are asking young people to keep the message of road safety in mind at all times.
