One year on since Marriage Equality referendum

A year ago today we found out the South East officially voted YES for Marriage Equality.

The 23rd of May 2015 was the day Ireland became the centre of attention around the world as results came out in favour of the YES vote in the referendum.

In doing so, Ireland became the first country ever to legalise marraige equality by popular vote.

412 couples have already married since November last year  while hundreds more couples had their foreign marriages automatically recognised.

Enya Kennedy was the chair of YES Equality in Kilkenny.

Speaking to Beat News as the result was announced in Kilkenny last year, she was full of praise for the effort the young people had in getting the referendum passed:

"They've made videos and they've knocked on the doors with us as well.

"For the people of Kilkenny to say 'Yes' for us to be able to walk down the street as an equal citizen and know that we're the same as everyone else and that the people of Kilkenny recognise is just huge and I'm just lost for words."
