Plans to add 23% VAT to food supplements delayed until November

A plan to place a 23% VAT rate on vitamins and food supplements is being delayed until November.

It had been argued the move, which was due to come in this Friday, could affect people's health and wellbeing.

Revenue says it is holding off on the measure while the Finance Minister examines the policy.

Today, the Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe wrote to Niall Cody, Chairman of the Revenue Commissioners, outlining that last November he “gave a commitment to address the matter by means of a specific paper to the tax strategy group during the summer period”.

Revenue confirmed to Minister Donohoe today that it will delay implementation of its new guidance until November 1, 2019.

Over 60,000 people had signed a petition to stop the VAT being put on vitamins and mineral supplements on March 1.
