Proposal to ban electricity and gas disconnections this winter

TD's will today debate a proposed ban on electricity and gas disconnections this winter.

Sinn Féin want the ban to cover the fuel allowance season, which runs from the end of September to April.

They want the government to prevent energy companies from turning off people's supplies due to non-payment of bills.

Sinn Féin TD Réada Cronin says it's essential due to the spiraling cost of energy.

"I knew a man who was cut off for two years, I dealt with the ESB and he got his electricity back.

"There is a plan for him to pay off his bill.

"I was out canvassing recently and called in to him, he has the heat on and the power on now.

"Just the difference it made, giving people back their dignity."
