Protest to take place at UHW this evening

A vigil will be held outside University Hospital Waterford this evening highlighting the need for 24/7 cardiac care in the South East region.

It comes after a Waterford man died at the weekend while being transferred to University Hospital Cork for cardiac care.

A national meeting was held last Saturday by the Still Waiting Health campaign - who have organised this evening's vigil - where the lack of services was highlighted.

The health minister, Simon Harris, told the dail on Wednesday that hospital management in Waterford have been given extra money for the service, but it's up to them to spend it.

Una Dunphy is a member of the still waiting campaign in Waterford:

"There's a lot of anger on the streets in Waterford because of this.

It's not just Waterford either, it's the entire South East region that's affected by the fact that we don't have the Cath lab services that we require for 500,000.

The cath lab in Waterford closes at 5 o'clock in the evening and it's closed all weekend so the vigil starts at 5 o'clock to signify when the lab is shut."
